Structures that give the garden a place to gather.

Architecture for the garden — built to last.

A shade structure in a Bangalore garden is not a luxury. In a city where summer temperatures regularly exceed 35°C and the sun is intense from March to June, an uncovered outdoor space is effectively unusable for much of the day. A well-designed pergola or pavilion is the difference between a garden that gets used and one that doesn’t. We design shade structures that are architecturally resolved — not kits installed in an afternoon.

Our pergola and gazebo designs begin with the architecture of the existing building. A shade structure that works with the proportions of the house, that uses compatible materials, that sits correctly in the garden without dominating it — this is a structure that will look right for decades. A structure designed in isolation, placed in the garden without reference to what surrounds it, reads as an afterthought.

We design structures in steel, timber, and stone — or combinations of these materials, depending on the architecture and climate of the project. In Bangalore, we often use mild steel for the primary structure (which handles thermal expansion and monsoon conditions well) with timber or bamboo for the roof and climbing plant supports. In Goa, we use laterite and timber to match the materials of the colonial architecture that surrounds our projects there.

Climbing plants are often an integral part of pergola design. We select climbers for Bangalore pergolas with care: species that cover quickly during the monsoon, hold their foliage through the dry months, and flower at the times of year when the garden is most used. Bougainvillea, Petrea, Thunbergia, and Quisqualis indica are among the species we use regularly in Bangalore conditions.

Every shade structure project includes the structural design and documentation, material specification, foundation requirements, and integration with the surrounding hardscape and outdoor lighting. We work with experienced structural contractors in Bangalore who can execute to our drawings. See the full landscape services range.

How We Work

From design through construction — how a shade structure project works.

01 — Site Assessment & Brief

We assess the proposed location in relation to the architecture of the house and the existing garden. The key questions: what does the structure need to achieve functionally (shade, rain protection, wind shelter), how must it relate visually to the building, and what material is appropriate for the construction and the climate? In Bangalore, monsoon loading and thermal expansion must both be designed for. In Goa, coastal salt air affects material selection significantly.

02 — Design & Structural Documentation

We produce a complete design package: plan, elevations, and section drawings to scale; material and finish specification; foundation requirements; connection details between structure and existing building. Where a structural engineer's certificate is required for building consent, we provide the drawings in the format needed for structural analysis. The fabricator and contractor receive unambiguous documentation — which prevents the majority of construction errors.

03 — Contractor Selection

We work with fabricators and contractors in Bangalore and Goa who can execute to our drawings. We obtain quotes on your behalf and advise on selection. We do not take a fee from contractors. Our recommendation is based entirely on the contractor's demonstrated ability to produce work to the required standard.

04 — Foundation & Fabrication Oversight

We visit during foundation work to verify that anchor positions are correctly located and that the foundation dimensions match our structural requirements. For fabricated structures, we review the fabrication at the workshop before elements are brought to site — identifying any deviations from our drawings before they become embedded in the construction.

05 — Erection & Finishing

We supervise the erection of the structure and the application of all finishes — paint, wax, oil, or protective coating, depending on the material. Where climbing plants are part of the design, we supervise the installation of the planting and the training system during or immediately after the structure is complete.

06 — Handover & Maintenance Notes

You receive a maintenance guide covering the structure and the planting. Timber structures require an annual application of protective oil. Steel structures need an annual check for rust spots, particularly after monsoon. Climbing plants need seasonal pruning and training. We specify exactly what is needed so the structure continues to look as it was intended.

Questions

What people ask about pergolas and garden structures.

How long does a pergola take to design and build in Bangalore?

The design and documentation phase typically takes three to five weeks. Construction time varies by material: mild steel structures can be fabricated and erected in two to three weeks; timber pergolas take longer to source quality material and season it correctly. A typical project from first site visit to completed structure runs eight to twelve weeks. We give a specific programme at the start of each project and manage contractor schedules to keep to it.

Do you handle BBMP permissions for garden structures?

We advise on BBMP and local authority requirements at the start of every project. What constitutes a permanent structure requiring permission versus a temporary or open structure varies by jurisdiction and by the specific design. We design structures that are appropriate for their planning context. Where formal applications are needed, we provide the drawings and documentation required; the client manages the submission and approval process. We will always advise honestly on what permissions a proposed structure requires.

How do climbing plants work on a Bangalore pergola?

We select climbers that establish well in Bangalore's climate and provide cover quickly during the monsoon season. Bougainvillea, Petrea volubilis, Thunbergia grandiflora, and Quisqualis indica (Rangoon Creeper) are among the species we use regularly — each with different flowering seasons, growth habits, and maintenance requirements. We specify the right anchor points in the structure itself, the correct training method for each species, and an establishment care guide so the plants grow the way we intend rather than the way they choose.
