LANDSCAPE DESIGN · OUTDOOR LIGHTING

A garden after dark, designed to be just as beautiful.

Thoughtful lighting extends the garden into the evening — creating atmosphere, enhancing safety, and revealing new perspectives. We design with restraint, so the light feels natural and the fixtures disappear into the landscape.

THE IDEA

Good outdoor lighting is invisible until it isn't.

The right lighting makes the garden safer, more inviting and more expressive. It highlights what matters, supports how you use the space and creates an atmosphere that feels effortless.

01
Layer
Light for trees, paths, people and architecture.
02
Warmth
Warm, natural light that keeps the garden inviting.
03
Restraint
Fixtures disappear by day; atmosphere takes over at night.

FOUR LAYERS OF LIGHT

The garden changes when the light is right.

A balanced combination of lighting layers brings out the beauty, structure and depth of an outdoor space.

01   FEATURE LIGHTING
Highlights trees, planting and focal points.
02   PATH LIGHTING
Guides movement and improves safety.
03   AMBIENT LIGHTING
Creates comfortable spaces for relaxing and dining.

04   ARCHITECTURAL ACCENT
Brings out walls, textures, water and garden structures.

THE BOWERSCAPES APPROACH

We design the night, not just the fixtures.

Lighting is part of the landscape — a careful balance of beauty, function and how the space feels after sunset.

A garden at night should feel as good as it does at noon.

Let’s create an outdoor space that feels inviting, beautiful and alive after the sun goes down.

QUESTIONS

What people ask about outdoor lighting design.

We specify LED throughout — for longevity, energy efficiency, and the quality of light they produce. Colour temperature for outdoor use is typically 2700K to 3000K: warm enough to feel inviting, cool enough to render plant colours accurately at night. We specify IP65-rated fixtures for ground and planting areas, and IP44 or higher for covered but exposed positions. We avoid decorative fixtures that prioritise appearance over performance and specify fittings that will last a minimum of ten years in outdoor conditions.
Via the home’s existing electrical supply, through exterior-rated conduit run during the hardscape or planting phase. We coordinate lighting cable routes with the hardscape installation so conduit is buried before paths are laid — not cut into them afterwards. We work alongside your electrical contractor and provide a complete lighting layout with fixture positions, cable routes, switching zones, and dimmer requirements. For new builds, we engage from the structure stage so conduit is cast into floors and walls.
Yes — we design outdoor lighting schemes for existing gardens regularly. The approach is different from a new garden: we work around existing planting and hardscape, minimising disruption while maximising the effect. In most cases, surface-mounted conduit can be run along wall bases and concealed in planting beds without disturbing mature plants. The result is indistinguishable from a scheme that was designed from scratch.
Yes — outdoor lighting is available as a standalone service and as an integrated element of our full landscape design projects. It works particularly well alongside our water feature and pergola design services, where lighting is an integral part of the finished experience. We design the lighting scheme in parallel with the planting and hardscape so every layer is considered together from the start.

A garden at night is a different place entirely.
