Landscape Design · Terrace & Balcony
Your terrace, transformed into a space worth being in.
Small in footprint. Generous in feeling.
Terraces in Bangalore are among the most underused spaces in the city’s urban homes. Often exposed to afternoon sun with no shade strategy, they become unusable for much of the year — too hot in summer, waterlogged in the monsoon. The problem is not the terrace. It is the absence of design.
We design terraces and balconies in Bangalore that work through every season. That means a shade strategy for summer — a pergola, a sail shade, or a canopy of climbers trained over a lightweight structure. It means drainage that handles the monsoon without flooding the floor or the walls below. It means planted densely enough to feel like a garden, with species selected for the specific wind and light exposure of that terrace at that height in that neighbourhood.
Bangalore’s terraces are particularly suited to edible gardens — herbs, greens, tomatoes, chillis — which thrive in the city’s moderate temperatures and can be grown in raised beds or containers without needing ground soil. We design edible terrace gardens that are productive, manageable, and beautiful enough that the kitchen garden and the ornamental garden exist in the same space without compromise.
For balconies — smaller in scale but equally important in urban apartments — we design planting schemes and furniture arrangements that make the most of every square foot. A well-designed balcony in an Indiranagar or Koramangala apartment can become the most-used room in the flat. We have seen it happen.
Every terrace project includes a planting plan, a structural recommendation for any shade elements, an outdoor lighting scheme if required, and a maintenance guide calibrated to the specific plants we select. We can also design vertical gardens for terraces where floor space is limited but wall space is available. Read more about the studio.
What We Deliver
How We Work
How a terrace project works from first conversation to finished space.
01 — Structural & Waterproofing Assessment
Before any design work begins, we assess the structural capacity of the terrace and the condition of the waterproofing membrane. This shapes everything that follows. Load limits determine which planting approaches are feasible. Membrane condition determines whether remedial waterproofing is needed before installation. We give you an honest assessment at the start — including the cost implications — so there are no surprises later.
02 — Design & Plant Palette
We develop a spatial layout for the terrace — how containers, planting beds, seating, and circulation are arranged — and a plant palette chosen for the specific orientation, light, and exposure of your terrace. Terraces in Bangalore are often exposed to strong afternoon wind as well as intense sun; the planting must be suited to both. We specify container types, growing media, and irrigation in the same document as the planting plan.
03 — Paving & Structure Design
If the terrace has an existing concrete floor, we design paving that sits over it with a drainage layer between — either raised porcelain tiles, composite decking, or natural stone on adjustable pedestals. The drainage layer is critical: it protects the waterproofing membrane while allowing water to reach the drains. We detail this junction carefully so the finished surface looks resolved and the structure below is protected.
04 — Irrigation Design
Container gardens dry out faster than ground-level gardens — particularly on a Bangalore terrace in April and May. We design an automated drip irrigation system for every terrace garden we work on. Drip irrigation delivers water precisely to the root zone of each plant, reducing evaporation and preventing the wet-dry cycles that stress plants. We connect to the building's water supply and specify a timer that can be adjusted seasonally.
05 — Installation & Supervision
We supervise installation, checking paving levels and drainage before planting, and reviewing plant positioning before containers are filled. Most terrace projects in Bangalore can be installed in two to three days once all materials are on site. We verify that the irrigation system is functioning correctly before we leave.
06 — Care Notes & Handover
You receive a complete care document: irrigation settings for each season, fertilising schedule, pruning guidance, and species-specific notes. Container gardens require more frequent attention than ground gardens — we are clear about this from the start and design maintenance requirements into the brief.
Questions
What people ask about terrace and balcony gardens.
Can my terrace or balcony support the weight of a garden?
We assess this at the outset of every terrace project. Most Bangalore apartment terraces are designed for live loads that can accommodate careful planting with lightweight growing media. Where structural limits are a concern, we work with lightweight containers, composite decking, and soilless or reduced-weight growing substrates. We coordinate with the building's structural engineer where required and never specify a load that the structure cannot safely carry.
What plants work best on a Bangalore apartment terrace?
The planting palette depends on the orientation and exposure of your specific terrace. South and west-facing terraces receive intense afternoon sun — we specify heat-tolerant, drought-adapted species that will not scorch. North-facing terraces are shaded and need species that genuinely prefer low light. East-facing terraces get the best of Bangalore's morning sun and suit the widest range of plants. We assess your specific conditions before specifying a single plant.
Do you handle drainage and waterproofing for terrace gardens?
Drainage is a priority in every terrace garden we design. We review the existing waterproofing membrane before any planting or installation, and we design every planter and paving detail so that water drains freely without sitting on the membrane. Where the existing waterproofing is inadequate, we will tell you before we begin and recommend the appropriate remediation — because a leak discovered after the garden is installed is far more disruptive than one identified before.
That terrace you’ve been ignoring could be your favourite room.
